This group of photo galleries follows the development of the East West Rail Link section between Bletchley and Bicester
The Western Section of the East West Rail project involves re-constructing and upgrading disused and underused rail track between Bedford and Oxford via Bletchley and Bicester, and Milton Keynes and Aylesbury via Winslow
The aspiration to establish a strategic railway connecting East Anglia with Central, Southern and Western England has been promoted and developed since 1995 by the East West Rail Consortium, made up of an alliance of local authorities led by Cambridgeshire County Council.
On 16 July 2012, the Department for Transport confirmed that re-opening and upgrading the rail link between Bedford and Oxford, Milton Keynes and Aylesbury (East West Rail, Western Section) would be delivered by 2019, along with a commitment to electrify the Bedford to Oxford route.
Work includes:
Upgrading and doubling track between Oxford and Bicester - working in collaboration with Chiltern Railways to deliver this section by spring 2016 when passengers in Oxford will be able to take a fast train directly to London Marylebone – the first new rail link between London and a major city in 100 years
Upgrading and doubling track between Bicester and Claydon Junction (currently only used by freight trains)
